A project with Quarryview Primary School in Sunderland, exploring the river Wear from source to sea. 2004
The river Wear flows very near this primary school. The project took the river's journey from the high peaks of the pennines down to the docklands and the remains of a once proud shipbuilding industry. From the lead mining history through the rural landscape of the durham dales, the beauty and nature of weardale, through the city of Durham, its Cathedral and Finchale priory with its history and crumbling architecture, crossed by the vast viaduct of the A19 at Hylton and wending its way through the bustling city of Sunderland, past the university, National Glass Centre and the sculptures along the quayside, joining the sea at Roker pier. The children experienced trips to Finchale Priory and with the help of a Durham ranger learnt about wildlife and the importance of the river and how it formed the landscape. Some walked the river path all the way through Sunderland and the renovated quayside with its art and sculptures celebrating Sunderland's shipbuilding heritage.
Each worked on an aspect of the river that they liked. This was the result.
